Inequality between Families in Health and Survival in Sweden, 1900-2023

Ingrid K van Dijk, Lund University

Families provide the early childhood environment for children and crucially affect children’s health and wellbeing over their childhood. They generate inequalities in health in young adulthood which can in turn affect educational and occupational careers. In this paper, I study health of a cohort of young men from a life course perspective. I study determinants in the family of origin, indicated by family socioeconomic status and adversity in the family. I address these factors in relation to their health at conscription in Sweden 1900-1997. Moreover, mid-life health outcomes are linked to socioeconomic, health and survival outcomes later in life.
