The research “Transfamilias, what is behind a gender change? addressed the complex realities of families of trans people in Colombia and showed that the family nucleus plays a fundamental role in the development and well-being of trans people, being a facilitator during the transition and helping them reduce feelings of loneliness, depression and social isolation. The study, in which 10 family units of trans people between 8 and 26 years old participated, showed that transitions are processes that, if they do not have the necessary support, can be painful experiences with physical, emotional and mental consequences for people. Some parents say that this situation can generate uncertainty, incomprehension and rejection from their primary circles, and by not having the necessary knowledge, they choose to isolate their daughters or sons, seeking their protection and promoting an environment free of stigma and prejudice. Gender transition not only implies an individual change, but also requires a transformation in family and social dynamics, promoting a collective change that requires tools such as Comprehensive Education for Sexuality and having allies that promote the guarantee of Sexual and Reproductive Rights of all people without discrimination.
