Re-purposing bibliometric data to estimate migration of scholars allows for investigating scientific and policy-relevant questions that were previously under-explored. We use data from Scopus on 28+ million publications by 8+ million scholars worldwide and extend the literature by focusing simultaneously on gender differences in internal and international migration. Our analysis contrasts countries within the Global South with estimates for countries within the Global North. We found that the gender gap in intensity and spread of migration is bigger for countries in Global South than in Global North. However, the relationship between the roles that internal and international migration play for the population growth at the subnational level is similar for men and women in both Global South and North. Our results have implications for understanding gender inequality and promoting more equitable science at global and subnational levels, indicating an intersection between global regions and gender inequalities.
