The U.S. Census Bureau has released a new software application, DAPPS 4.0 (Demographic Analysis and Population Projections System). DAPPS 4.0 is a comprehensive freely available software designed to support demographic analysis and population projections from a wide array of data sources, including population censuses, surveys, vital statistics, as well as administrative data and other new data sources. Featuring a modern interface, streamlined workflows, and a range of advanced analytical methods, DAPPS users can access over 20 different techniques for analyzing population dynamics, such as age and sex distribution, fertility, mortality, and migration. DAPPS applies the cohort component projection method that is widely used by National Statistics Offices in low- and middle-income countries to produce official national population projections. DAPPS also features the Subnational Projections Toolkit, that includes tools designed to produce population projections at the subnational level using both the cohort-component method and the mathematical extrapolation methods. With seamless data integration from common spreadsheet applications and including new subnational projection methods and enhanced visualization options, DAPPS is an indispensable tool for demographers and data analysts seeking to use a variety of data sources in their population projections. This paper discusses the features of DAPPS 4.0 and its applications in LMICs.
