Violent Victimization among Immigrants: Examining Trend of Foreign-Born Homicide Victims and Perpetrators

Lutendo Malisha, Statistics South Africa

Deaths due to violence are on a rise globally (WHO, 2022). South Africa was ranked number 11 of the most dangerous countries in the world (Statista, 2024). The South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics report indicated that murders have been on the rise in South Africa since 2013 (SAPS, 2024). This study conducts a trend analysis on foreign-born individuals who were victims and perpetrators of violent death (homicide/murder) in South Africa from 2010 to 2023. The study utilises mortality and causes of death data processed by STATSSA from vital registration systems and South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics data. For analysis, univariate, bivariate, and multivariate were used. Findings from both data sets show that there has been an increase in the violent death rates of foreign-born in South Africa from 2010 to 2023. Violent deaths committed by foreign-born individuals did not show a consistent pattern but fluctuated yearly. Males immigrants are at high risk of being both victims and perpetrators of violent deaths in South Africa. While those from the SADC region are at greater risk of violent death compared to individuals from other regions.
