Childhood internal mobility: an overview of precariousness in Europe

Helga A. G. De Valk, Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI-KNAW), University of Groningen

Many children move within a country before reaching adulthood. This so-called internal mobility during childhood is a potentially stressful life event which may have adverse consequences later in life. In the ERC-funded MYMOVE project, we studied how moving as a child may influence the health, well-being, and family formation of later in life. This was done by using longitudinal population register data and survey (panel) data from across Europe. In this presentation we synthesis the findings from across Europe (including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and the UK) and address who is moving, when the move takes place, with whom, over what distance and with what outcomes. This knowledge will help to address potential vulnerability of children and their different levels of precariousness across Europe.
