INFLUENCE OF POST TRAUMATIC STRESS AND ANXIETY ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AMONG SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN FCT ABUJA, NIGERIA

Abstract This study investigated the influence of Post-traumatic stress, anxiety and academic achievement among Senior Secondary School Students in FCT, Abuja. The population of the study comprises of all SSS11 students of public schools in FCT, Abuja (7,625). A sample size of 520 students (220 males and 300 females) was proportionately selected from the population.Three hypotheses were raised to guide the study. Two research instruments were used for data collection, an adapted and modified instrument namely post-traumatic stress disorder inventory (PTSDIQ) and self developed instrument namely anxiety stress inventory(ASDI).Cronbach Alpha was used to establish the reliability and internal consistency of the instruments which yielded 0.72 and 0.075 respectively. The academic achievement of the students was measured using 20 questions for both English and Mathematics tests. The data collected were analyzed using PPMC Pearson Product- movement correlation. Hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The findings revealed that there is a weak negative relationship between posttraumatic stress and academic achievement .The findings also revealed that a significant relationship exist between anxiety and academic achievement. Recommendations were made based on the findings of the study.Among the recommendations is School psychologist should pay adequate attention to students with posttraumatic stress symptoms
