FERTILITY LEVELS OF WOMEN LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS AND RESEARCH INTO THE MECHANISMS OF ACTION OF HIV INFECTION ON THE DETERMINANTS OF FERTILITY IN WOMEN AGED 15-49: THE CASE OF CAMEROON AND RWANDA

Dimitri Dombou Ngweno, university of Dschang; Cameroon

Global statistics revealed an estimated 38 million of PLHIV with a retention of about 68%. Significant disparities exist in the distribution of the number of PLHIV Africa bears the greatest burden (UNAIDS, 2019). In Cameroon, the HIV prevalence is at about 3.7% with a retention of about 74% (UNAIDS, 2023). Rwanda has brought HIV/AIDS infection under control with a prevalence of 1.5 in women of reproductive age and has achieved the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. Over the years, much has been done to scale up ART coverage among PLHIV in Rwanda but not yet in Cameroon. The purpose of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of the fertility in women living with HIV/AIDS and to the research of the mechanisms of action on the rate of fertility of women in Cameroon and Rwanda. This was aimed to show that there is a significant difference between the rate and the level of fertility among women living with HIV by age in Cameroun (one child less) but not in Rwanda that is less than one child (half).
