POST-DISASTER IMPACTS ON THE HEALTH OF THE POPULATION AFFECTED BY THE BRUMADINHO DAM BREAK, BRAZIL

Yeda De carvalho, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP)

This study analyzes the impacts of the 2019 Brumadinho dam break on hospitalization rates in the affected municipalities located in the Paraopeba River basin. Using the Differences in Differences (DiD) model, the effect of the disaster is assessed over time, comparing the affected municipalities with a control group. The results revealed significant changes in the behavior of hospitalization rates in the exposed municipalities in relation to the control municipalities, evidencing the negative impact of the disaster on local public health. The analysis included additional variables, such as COVID-19 mortality rate, GDP, and sex ratio, for a broader understanding of the influencing factors.
