Specialists tend to separate the school quantity and school quality analysis as measured by the proficiency tests. This paper will link aspects of school quantity with school quality, using the Brazilian lower secondary education as a case study. The time variation of the proficiency test will be decomposed by the broader effect of the education flow (grade repetition and dropout) and the other determinants of learning. The decomposition exercise allows the evaluation of compositional effect caused by the percentage of students with grade repetition. We expect the development of this decomposition to be extended to other countries.
