Social Dynamics and Marriage Aspiration between Highly Educated and Educated Employed Brides: A Situational Study of Bihar, India

Despite socioeconomic and educational transition in the state like Bihar (India), arranged marriage are predominantly placed. Hence, present study tried to understand the nexus of social dynamics, bridal aspiration and driving factor for arrange marriage. It is a comparative study between highly educated unemployed (HEU) versus highly educated employed (HEE) married women’s. The primary data were collected from six wards representing six different administrative circle of Patna Municipal Corporation. The total 300 (150 from each group) individual sample were collected from married women aged 18-35 years. The bi-variate, tri-variate analysis, chi square and logistic regression analysis were conducted to achieve the study objectives. Result indicates that the HEE brides go for arranged marriages. However, more than one-third of the brides got opportunity to interact and communicate with groom before marriage particularly HEE compare to their counterpart. More than 80% of parents seeks approval from their daughters before marriage. Study identified nine preferential characteristics for groom, that further converted into composite index. Around one third of the bride’s aspiration were high particularly in employed category at three-point scale. Finally, it divulges that higher aspiration for groom characteristics leads to arrange marriage type although HEE has extra edge for mate selection.
